Monumental Inscriptions

If you have relatives buried in the graveyard in the past and are interested in finding out more about their graves, our new Memorial Inscriptions DVD is now available. The information contained in the production is the result of a number of years work by parishioners of St Samlet’s and a few members of the Glamorgan Family History Society [GFHS]

The information on the DVD includes transcriptions of the Llansamlet Burial Registers (to 1935) as well as the Llansamlet Graveyard Index, which contains a record of the names recorded on each stone. The grave numbers cross reference with the Memorial Inscriptions and the Graveyard Plan and the Graveyard Photographs are also included on the DVD

The DVD gives an interesting glimpse into the lives of past parishioners. Some of the inscriptions also reveal interesting information about other family members, loved ones buried elsewhere or ‘at sea’ or ‘killed in action’. It’s amazing how far Llansamlet parishioners travelled in the days when journeys would have taken months under difficult conditions with references to Australia, South America, South Africa and Cuba common.

The publication contains a record of the inscriptions on the stones in the graveyard surviving at the time of transcription. Not all burials have been marked with gravestones in the past and some of the older graves may have been difficult or impossible to read. Some graves were simply grassed over and as such no information can be determined.

Copies of the DVD are available from the Parish Office £12.50. Information is also available on the Llansamlet Church Facebook page.
